P IS FOR PEACE

This is another of my favourite words. I know, I have many favourite words … but just say the word, ‘peace’.

Peace.

The word itself conjures up so much meaning; tranquillity, quiet, stillness, calm, restful, freedom … if you breathe the word quietly when you’re alone you can almost feel the air around you change.

However, the less inner peace you have, the harder it will be to have outer peace. So breathing the word ‘Peace’ quietly may not have such an impact on you, if your mind is skating around. If the hustle and bustle of life is taking over your thoughts and taking over your being, then you are going to struggle with peace.

Peace is something that you become. It can take practice to become peaceful, but if you can achieve it, it is one of the best feelings in the world, because no matter what is going on around you, you’ll have the ability to stay calm and self-assured. Being at peace means you don’t entertain the negative impact others could have in your life, you override these thoughts because your inner peace is so deep, so pure that others can’t have an effect on you. Yes, you may feel a little sting, that’s natural if you feel you’re being judged or criticised, but if you’re always coming from a place of love, you are not one to judge and criticise others, then you will bounce back quicker. You want to be able to get to a point in your life, where you are hardly ever faced with negativity because you send out so much love, that all you receive back is love. Any negativity is like hitting a shield and the odd comment may burn through the shield but you can easily let it go. When you are at this point, you know the true meaning of inner peace.

How easy is it to become peaceful? Personally, I believe it’s easy if you can live from a place of love. Love for yourself and love for others. Living a life of non-judgement and gratefulness is definitely the way to start. As I always suggest, start by writing your gratitude list. This is one of the most effective ways to come from a place of love.

Some of our most famous inspirational leaders found inner peace through meditation. You may think of meditation as sitting quietly, many people who have busy lives find this hard. I most certainly did when I was first introduced to it and to be honest, it’s not my favourite way to meditate. I find Gabrielle Bernstein’s way of mediating the most effective. Her music is perfect. Sometimes it’s just about putting music on and doing nothing. You’ll be amazed at how productive you feel after.

If you’re not feeling at peace with yourself, ask yourself, what can you do to change this? What can you do about it? If changes need to be made for you to find peace, then make these changes. It may take time to make the changes, but it’s about choices. You must choose to find your peace. Our time here is precious. We must appreciate that we are more than ourselves. We serve a bigger purpose than ourselves. When you follow your passion, when you follow your heart, you will find your soul purpose … this in itself will lead to inner peace. Come from a place of love and watch your world change.

In this week’s therapeutic writing exercise think about your world when you have inner peace.

Firstly before any writing, try to meditate. As I said, I recommend Gabrielle Berstein, you can pick up her free guided meditation on her website. Once you have participated in meditation that suits you, (you may need to experiment), if you’re not keen on Gabrielle’s methods, there are plenty of others you can research and try.

Once you have done this, then write. Freewrite about what you feel when you have inner peace. Concentrate on the feeling inside, not the material things in life, the feelings that come from within. Once you have these feelings conquered your outer world will fall into place.

Remember: Positive messages throughout the day, helps the negative thoughts stay away.

This week’s inspirational word

O IS FOR OPPORTUNITY

You may have heard 101 quotes about taking the opportunities that are presented to you. I’ve included a few in this blog post. You may feel they are cliche … However, if you are to look throughout your life and think about the coincidences, the decisions, the circumstances or situations that may have been put upon you, you could easily understand how certain opportunities may have arisen from these life events.

This may not make much sense to you at the moment? But often an opportunity will arise when we need it. Sometimes we don’t see opportunities as the opportunities that they are, sometimes we see them as a hindrance. If your gut is telling you that’s not your path, that is fine, you know in your heart your purpose. Sometimes opportunities are presented so we can see what we ‘don’t’ want. If we’re thinking about what we ‘don’t’ want, we are attracting this to us, however, this is a great way to self-analyse and channel your thoughts into what you do want, so the universe can present you with sought-after opportunities. Even if this opportunity is presented as a difficulty, be the person who wants to make a change in your life and grab it with both hands, as a difficulty and a challenge could lead you to the wonderful life you deserve.

If opportunities do arise it means we have to think. We have to truly think about what we want. I truly believe opportunities will arise to test you, this isn’t God or the angels playing games, this is simply them guiding you to your purpose. So if an opportunity arises and you feel it is not right for you, it probably isn’t. However, there will be opportunities that you may have passed quickly and decided they weren’t for you, when in fact they may have guided you down the right path. Do not despair … these opportunities will come round again in a different form. Another gateway, another avenue … you have a purpose, it needs fulfilling, you will be guided down this route until you believe it. You must believe it.

Believing in yourself, your purpose, your reason for being … opportunities will be gifted to you. So don’t dismiss an opportunity because it doesn’t look like something you want, it could easily be an avenue into something that you do want. So look closely and make it work for you.

In this week’s therapeutic writing exercise think about opportunities you wish to arise in the future.

Here, I could have asked you to look at opportunities that you have missed that you wished you hadn’t, however, this focuses on the negative. It is hard to turn that missed opportunity into a positive, because it may not come around again in the same form. It will come back around again, if it’s meant to be, just on a different path, in a different way. So this week, ask yourself if you could have an opportunity to arise, what would it be?

Write it down …

Now write about the positive impact this opportunity would have on your life. Keep writing until you feel the desire for this opportunity so bad, you will make the universe create it for you … the universe is listening … it is ready to deliver when you are ready to receive.

This week’s inspirational word

N IS FOR NOURISH

Last week we talked about the mind and how it can convince us that we are not worthy, so I thought nourish was a great word to follow with this week because if we nourish our mind, we inevitably nourish our body and soul.

Even simply by reading these blog posts you are nourishing your mind, because you are looking to improve your outlook on life. This is amazing nourishment for the mind because you want to grow and learn. Sometimes, we are hit with hard times, there are situations and circumstances we can’t do anything about, but if our minds are nourished we can deal with these upheavals better.

You could be dealing with some heavy stuff at the moment, you may be struggling to see the wood for the trees, you may feel as if life is against you. You may feel it’s too late to start nourishing your mind because you’re already in the midst of some life chaos … it’s never too late. The best time to start nourishing your mind, body and soul is now! Most definitely if you’re in the middle of one of life’s rollercoaster moments. Nourishing yourself will help you deal with any situation much better.

So, how do we keep our minds nourished? There are wonderful techniques, such as the therapeutic writing that I encourage on my blog, meditation or exercise that involves mindfulness like yoga, pilates or walking. There are many ways to keep our minds nourished and healthy. However, maybe you feel you can’t do some of the techniques daily. If you can exercise daily that is great. You are well on your way to having a healthy nourished mind.

Personally, I love walking in the hills, but this is something that I only do once a month because it takes a full day to thoroughly enjoy the scenery and really breathe in the experience. I love writing my blog posts which I do weekly, plus, I love writing fiction which again I try to do as often as I can. But when it comes to running my own business, I have to make sure accounts etc. are kept in order, this for me isn’t very nourishing of the mind. For some people, it might be. Figures and numbers might be your thing. If it is your thing, then follow it with your heart, as this is your purpose. Taking a step back to understand what makes you tick is a great way to understand how you can nourish your mind.

It doesn’t mean that I stop the parts of my business that don’t nourish my mind, it just means I continue to enjoy the parts of my business and life that do nourish my mind. That’s the key, we can’t stop all the things in life that don’t make our soul tick, but what we can do is be grateful for the things that do make our soul tick.

We have dreams that need fulfilling, passions that drive us forward, these need nourishment … if we don’t nourish our dreams and our purpose, our minds become under-nourished. Keep your mind healthy and the rest will follow.

In this week’s therapeutic writing exercise think about what does make you tick;

What makes you excited? Think about something other than sleep, resting, watching TV etc. something that really gives you a sense of belonging.

Imagine you are at your most peaceful, where, who, how, what … does this involve? Write until your hand hurts. Really delve deep into this one guys … really give your heart, mind and soul the nourishing it needs.

This week’s inspirational word

M IS FOR MIND

Your mind is one of the most powerful tools … have you heard the saying, ‘Your mind is playing tricks on you!’?

What does this actually means?

It usually refers to a time when we are tired or not thinking clearly and the mind starts running away with itself. Have you ever convinced yourself of something that isn’t true? I’m all for gut instinct, as we have it for a reason, however, there are times when our mind decides to wander into depths of the unknown, that unknown becomes real to us, to a point we convince ourselves that this is our belief. For example; we convince ourselves we’re not good enough, that people don’t like us, that we are not worthy! Sound familiar?

This is why mindfulness is important. Mindfulness is somewhat a new buzz word, that actually has been going on for centuries, however, mindfulness is very important to our well-being; mentally, physically and emotionally.

If we can convince ourselves of our unworthiness, we sure as hell can convince ourselves of our worthiness. No-one is more important than you and you are no more important than anyone else. We all exist on this physical plane together, if we encouraged, supported and lived as one, the world would be a better place. Now you may have some kind of passion that you feel you can’t quite muster up the courage to fulfil, you’re worried about what people will say, you’re worried you will be judged, now this little voice is your ego. Your ego will convince you that you are no good at these given talents … because that’s what your passion is, ‘your given talents’ – you’ve been given these talents as a gift to give to others.

Now you can either allow your mind to listen to your ego, which may have been influenced by those around you; not giving you encouragement or support with your passion. This is very common. Parents, siblings and other family members can be the worse influence, believe it or not, often it is not done out of malice, but from a place of fear. ‘They don’t believe that great things can happen to people like you (them)’. ‘They don’t want you to be disappointed if you fail’. ‘It’s best to go down a safe route’. These statements, like many others, can chip away until you believe them. Until you believe them more than you do your in passion.

My passion is writing, it has been since I was a little girl. I love writing fiction, which you can see more about my women’s fiction here, however, I also have the drive to inspire others through my writing, hence the reason I feel drawn to writing my inspirational blog. I could have centred my blog around writing fiction, I have a MA in Creative Writing, I am qualified to teach others on how to put a story together, but instead, I’m drawn to influencing others through my writing. Encouraging others through my writing. I could easily put together videos because that’s a trend that has taken off immensely, I don’t feel that my purpose is to video myself and talk to you … although, if we met, I’m sure you’d find I sure can talk, but my motivation comes from writing. If I’d listened to others, even my parents, I’d be working in a 9-5 unfulfilling job. I did that until I had my daughters and quite honestly, I found it soul-destroying.

I knew I had to follow my passion. I also know I have to encourage others to follow theirs. There are far too many nay-sayers in the world. People who believe we are here to pay our bills and just get on. We are not. We are here to fulfil a purpose. So let your mind wander, let your mind take over, let your mind take you in the direction of your dreams.

If you’re a creative person who needs freedom, you’ll understand where I’m coming from with feeling soul-destroyed because of rules and regulations. You feel restricted. Now, this is because you have a purpose that needs fulfilling. One of the main reasons you are not fulfilling this purpose is because your mind has convinced you that you are not worthy. But if you have that urge or desire then grab it and don’t listen to anyone around you who brings you down, or doesn’t allow you to fulfil your potential. Even if it’s a loved one. This is their fear, don’t allow it to be yours.

So, it’s time to start practising mindfulness and ensure our mind has our back … our mind doesn’t want to rule against us, our mind wants to ensure we fulfil our destiny. It’s the ego that chips away. So let’s get ignoring that ego and focus on nurturing our mind so we can achieve our dreams.

In this week’s therapeutic writing exercise, let go and write about your passion(s);

However, before you start free-writing, take 10-15 minutes out to just breathe. Sit in silence and breathe. If you have children, I understand you’ll be thinking, ’10-15 minutes to breathe, that would be nice’, I get that, but I urge you to do this … and try not to fall asleep!

Once you’ve breathed deeply for 10-15 minutes, write …

Write about your passion. If you could fulfil your purpose what do you think it would be? What do you think you’re here to do?

Write until you feel the need to stop. Get your thoughts out on paper. You are here to fulfil this passion. You have a purpose. Convince your mind of this and ignore the ego.

I realise many of the exercises throughout this blog is to write about what you want to achieve in life, but once you start understanding and reiterating this, you will soon find yourself pushing yourself towards your dreams. Your mind will start focusing on the positives. Positives lead to more energy. Energies lead to greater mindfulness.

This week’s inspirational word

L IS FOR LAUGHTER

You’ll have heard the saying, ‘Laughter is the best form of medicine’ … if not, read this awesome health article.

Science says: Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

For me, laughter is essential in my every day living. Now, admittedly, I do have a wicked sense of humour, so I do find lots of things funny. I laugh at myself, I laugh with my girls, I laugh with my friends. I like to laugh. I’m not quite sure how people get through their days without a dose of laughter.

You may be thinking at this moment, I have nothing to laugh about. There’s always something to laugh about. ALWAYS! Okay, do you find yourself being annoyed when you hear people laughing, because, life just isn’t funny! Why do some people get to have such a good time and you’re feeling down and miserable. How did you get the raw deal?

Ok, this is where we go back to basics … gratitude! Write a list of all things you are grateful for in your life. This will move you slightly out of the heady zone. The zone of self-pity and low self-worth. Really study these things you have in your life, don’t focus on the things that are bringing you down, focus on the good. This is a sure way to start to bring more laughter into your life.

If you are really feeling that laughter is just not happening at the moment, then go for a walk. Walking in the outside air, in nature, is a great way to release endorphins, which will make you feel better which in turn can lead to more laughter.

Even if you’re not feeling the need to laugh, sometimes if we are in a situation that requires us to be polite, fake laughter can lead to real laughter. Try it with just smiling to yourself. Smile to your heart’s content. Smile until it actually does lead to laughter.

We can all find different things funny, I find most things funny, from comedians to practical jokes … I can find myself in situations where I shouldn’t laugh, but I do! They are the worst. But that’s because I don’t take myself or life too seriously. I like laughing. Laughter is good for the soul.

So find something that is bound to make you laugh; there are endless clips on youtube – from babies giggling to harmless pranks. Spend time with people who make you laugh. If you find these people are few and far between, maybe look at picking up some new hobbies, join some groups and meet new people. Friends should be the people we go to in times of sorrow, the shoulder to cry on, but they are also the people you should turn to if you need a good old belly laugh. Once you start to feel happier, you’ll attract happier people into your life, which will lead to more laughter. So start pasting on that smile and attract more smiley people to you.

This week, is not only about therapeutic writing, we are going to take some physical actions;

Firstly, using the free-writing technique, ask yourself these questions;

1/ When was the last time you laughed? Properly laughed … felt it from inside …

2/ Write about a few situations in your life that have made you laugh …

2/ What makes you laugh? Comedy shows, jokes, conversations with friends … there will be certain things in your life that trigger a release of laughter, think about this and write about it.

Secondly, actions …

This week your task is to do something that makes you laugh … really laugh … from the above writing exercise, you will surely find something in your life that truly makes you giggle. Have fun. Get those laughter lines and memories made … once you increase your laughter levels, watch the joy in your life increase.

Remember: Positive messages throughout the day, helps the negative thoughts stay away.
